VERUS SAUVIGNON BLANC  AND VERUS  FURMINT

“Štajerska Slovenija is a region of Sauvignon Blanc and Šipon/Furmint, and the wines of the Verus

VERUS SAUVIGNON BLANC 2021

“From its founding until today, Verus has become and remains a synonym for pure, varietal, fresh,
aromatic, seemingly simple, but in fact substantial wines from Štajerska Slovenija.”

WINES OF THE WEEK, VERUS SAUVIGNON BLANC 2018

‘Damn delicious!’ are the first words I wrote down. Green apples and morning-dew-wet grass and
pea shoots. Bit of fresh guava roundness. Vibrant, full of energy, fabulously balanced. Little bit of
tomato vine and basil and spearmint on the finish. It fills the mouth and, unusually for Sauvignon,
satisfies.

VERUS PINOT GRIS 2013

»You know Pinot Grigio? Verus Pinot Gris 2013 Slovenia is quite unlike most of them. Unlike basic Pinot Grigio, it is chock-full of flavour with the perfumed breadth of an Alsace Pinot Gris but has the crisp freshness of the best Pinot Grigio of Friuli in north-east Italy and is bone dry.«

MATCHING FOOD AND WINE, RIESLING 2013

»I’ve been dithering about which of the Verus range to recommend as my wine of the week because frankly they’re all delicious but if you haven’t tried them before the riesling is a good starting point. Although it’s dry(ish) it has a floral character I haven’t quite come across anywhere else.

I’m wondering if it’s a special Slovenian strain of the variety that makes it especially charming. Or maybe it’s just the ripeness (at 13% it’s relatively high in alcohol for a riesling.) It would make the perfect aperitif but would also be lovely with light food like a chicken or prawn salad.«

VERUS FURMINT 2011

»Tokaj’s most important grape but grown in Slovenia not Hungary. Broad, spicy and pretty on the palate but convincingly tense with clean, fresh fruit. Tart on the finish but none the worse for it. 13%«

VERUS RIESLING 2008

»Slovenia is qietly creeping into our wine conciousness and could become a significant player for elegant, cool-climate whites in a few years time. This Riesling shows why.«

WINES OF SLOVENIA – VERUS WINES  2009

2009 Verus Vineyards Furmint – »This pure Furmint undergoes 15 month ageing in French barriques with constant lees stirring. It has a very well-defined bouquet with Kaffir lime and white flowers, echoes of wild nettle developing with time. The palate has a ripe entry with nuanced lemon curd and honeyed tones, orange zest and fresh apricot, leading to a poised finish. This is delicious and the oak works very well, never dominating the character of the wine. »

2009 Verus Vineyards Riesling »With 6-7 grams residual, this Riesling has a grassy nose with touches of dried honey and spice, perhaps more New World in aromatic profile than Germanic. The palate has a rounded texture with touches of toffee apple, orange peel and apricot on the the well defined, quite tense finish. This is excellent.«

2009 Verus Vineyards Sauvignon: »A neutral, stony nose: taut and well defined with limestone notes developing with aeration. The palate has fine acidity, quite nuanced with a well-balanced, Marlborough-like finish. Fine.«

2009 Verus Vineyards Pinot Gris: »Tasted at the Wines of Slovenia Trade & Press tasting. A well-defined, stony, quite minerally bouquet. The palate has a ripe entry, lightly honeyed with touches of lemongrass that leads to a ‘prickly’ finish. Fine.«

DECANTER, WINE OF THE MONTH

VERUS SAUVIGNON BLANC 2008

»Slovenian Savignon Blanc now has a benchmark. Ticking all the necessary boxes, adding interest is a sprinkling of dried herbs and a pinch of white pepper. Flavours are largely tropical in nature, complemented by green apples and underscored by strong mineral notes. Very refreshing.«

DECANTER, WINE OF THE MONTH

VERUS FURMINT 2008

»Forget your caffeine or energy-drink fix – if you’re in search of a pick-me-up wine with great vitality and life, look no further. From an outfit barely two years old in Slovenia, this is a supremely tasty, sweetly fruited Furmint, with citrus zing and freshly picked apple notes from start to finish.«

SAUVIGNON BLANC 2008

»Lovely clean fruit – so pure and bumptious and attention grabbing! Like an explosion of ripe berries in the mouth. Great balance and zip. Talk about a summer wine.«

PINOT GRIS 2007

»This is one of the finest examples of Pinot Gris that I have tasted in quite a while – a wonderful fresh exotic nose with melons, grapefruit and ginger. Zhis palate is medium-bodied and intense, with a superb quality of fruit, balanced by excellent acidity. It may seem pricey, but is worth every cent. Great on its own, with salads or with richer fish dishes.«

ABOUT VERUS WINES

»They have great purity, they have great freshness, they have liveliness. They all are very nice versions of varieties, but the one I prefer is Furmint. It seems so home grown, it seems so happy in his place.«

VERUS FURMINT 2007

»…We might like it. We might buy it. Especially if it’s like this – tangy zesty, aggressive, refreshing, almost spritzy, It does the Sauvignon job of revitalizing the palate rather well.«

TIM ATKIN, THE GUARDIAN/THE OBSERVER

VERUS FURMINT 2007

Selects best summer wines: »This screwcapped white, made from the grape variety that has made Tokaj famous, is floral, soft and aromatic, with flavours of apples and pears and crisp finish.«

JAMIE GOODE, WINE BLOG

VERUS FURMINT 2007

»…It has lively, fruity almost peppery nose with some grapey depth to it. The palate is really liveley and fresh, with an exuberynt fruity, spicy character and hint of spritz on the bright, acidic finish. This is very pure, clean, minerally white that’s full flavoured but zippy, and would be a versatile food wine. I like this a lot.«

JANCIS ROBINSON, WINES OF THE WEEK

VERUS FURMINT 2007

»This week’s wine is a truly stunning dry white zhat comes complete with heart – warming story… An axciting new producer, Verus, a triumvirate of particularly ambitious young winemaking friends has produced a range of thrillinly pure 2007 white wine varietals… Wines are selling in a hansome screwcaped bottle, and I can recommend all of them as beautifully made, precise varietal expressions, and have chosen steely, firm Furmint as wine that stood out for me. … wine that, really should titilate your taste buds… You could certainly drink this wine now bur I don’t think there is any hurry whatever to drink it and would like to see how it evolves over the next 12 monthes at least…«
